Description: The aTa provides transportation services to people with disabilities, senior citizens, and the general public (ADA accessible). It is a transportation service for citizens of Manhattan and Riley County. Rides must be scheduled with the dispatcher at least 24 hours in advance.

 

Communityworks, Inc

Description: Communityworks is a home health agency that offers one-on-one services for people who have experienced a traumatic brain injury. Some services provided are: personal care assistance, individualized therapy, independent living skills, resource coordination, case management, and job coaching. The goal of Communityworks is to help individuals develop life-long support systems that will aide them in sustaining independent lifestyles.

Description: Crisis Center, Inc. provides services for domestic violence victims and their children, sexual assault victims and their families. Services include shelter, crisis intervention, and advocacy.

 

Families Together, Inc

Description: Families Together is the Parent Training and Information center serving Kansas families that include a son/daughter with disabilities. It serves families of children and young adults from birth up to age 23 (if still in school). Families Together in Topeka serves 29 counties in Northeast Kansas. Services include parent assistance, information and referral, workshops, conferences, advocacy support, newsletter, presentations and lending library.

Description: The Flint Hills Breadbasket provides food assistance to those in need, plus other services to help individuals/families.These services include: Emergency Food Pantry and USDA (TEFAP) Commodity Program (if income eligible), & and Community Resource Referral Program which includes food stamp applications and clothing assistance.

Description: The Flint Hills Community Clinic provides non-emergency, primary care medical services at no charge for uninsured Manhattan or Riley County residents living at or below 200% poverty.  In addition, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech language therapy services may be available.  Social worker volunteers can also assist individuals with vocational rehabilitation.  The clinic is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings but the appointment line accepts phone calls Monday through Friday.

Description: Dr. Christine Durrett is a clinical neuropsychologist. She conducts neuropsychological evaluations, which may be indicated for individuals with traumatic brain injury.

Housing and Credit Counseling, Inc.

Description: Housing and Credit Counseling, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping consumers achieve housing and financial goals and resolve related difficulties.  Core programs include: Financial Literacy and Credit Counseling, Homebuyer Counseling, and Tenant and Landlord Counseling.  Housing and Credit Counseling has offices in three locations: Topeka, Manhattan, and Lawrence.

Description: K-State Research and Extension provides education to the citizens of Kansas on a variety of subjects via local county offices. Educational information and programs include Health, Nutrition, Family and Consumer Sciences, Food Safety, 4-H Youth Development, Agricultural Economics, Horticulture, and many others. These programs are coordinated, led, or shared by county Extension agents and others on Web sites and through numerous conferences, workshops, field days, publications, newsletters and more.

Description: This agency has local offices available to assist veterans in locating programs and coordinating services. These services might include health, financial, and vocational resources. This office location serves Dickinson, Geary, Riley, Wabaunsee, and Washington counties.

  

Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF)

Description: The Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) provides a number of services formerly offered by SRS. These include public benefit programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). DCF oversees protective services for children and vulnerable adults. Vocational rehabilitation services encompass assessment of vocational skills, development of plans for employment, and arrangement for services to become employed. Disability determination services are available. The department is also responsible for determining Medicaid eligibility.

 

Kansas Legal Assistance Office

Description: Kansas Legal Services is a statewide non-profit organization with office locations throughout the state. It provides civil legal advice and representation at a reduced cost to income eligible individuals. Services may be impacted by the type of need (priority) and the agency's available funding at the time.

 

Kansas State University Speech and Hearing Center

Description: The Kansas State University Speech and Hearing Center provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapy services for a variety of communication and swallowing disorders, including those that result from brain injury. Clinical services address changes in cognitive processes, language, and motor speech abilities to communication, which may include alternative and augmentative communication strategies. Description: The Manhattan Adult Learning Center provides adult education services such as, basic computer skills, workplace and employment skills, and literacy tutoring.

 

Manhattan-Area Traumatic Brain Injury Support Group

Description:  The support group is a network of individuals who survived TBI and their family and friends created to work through the issues of recovery with others who are experiencing a similar situation.  The TBI support group meets monthly to discuss various informational topics and new ideas important for recovery. The group meets the 4th Thursday of the month from 5:30 to 7:00 pm at the College Avenue United Methodist Church located at 1609 College Ave. in Manhattan. Jane Garcia (jgarcia@ksu.edu), K-State Speech and Hearing Center, leads the group. 

 

Manhattan Emergency Shelter, Inc.

Description: Manhattan Emergency Shelter, Inc. provides emergency shelter, transitional living opportunities, and individualized case management to meet the immediate needs of the homeless in Riley and surrounding counties. Additional programs are offered to improve the success of clients including referral services, life skills classes, limited transportation services and advocacy.

Description: The Assistive Technology Center provides individualized training in basic computer use and in the use of adaptive technology. The Center offers patrons three workstations equipped with a variety of software and hardware including a screen reader, screen magnification, text-to-speech, and voice recognition.

 

Mercy Regional Health Center

Description: Mercy Regional Health Center is a 150 bed acute care medical facility that operates within 4 different locations in Manhattan. In addition to general medical care, rehabilitation is provided to inpatients and outpatients through occupational, physical, and speech therapy.

 

North Central Assistive Technology Access Site: OCCK, Inc.

Description: This Assistive Technology Access Site provides information, demonstration, and a short term loan of an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device or other assistive devices such as an adaptive switch or modified computer mouse/keyboard. It also offers a re-use program where durable medical equipment is refurbished and then given to people who need it.

 

North Central-Flint Hills Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC)

Description: The Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) is designed to help survivors and families make informed decisions about important services and supports.  The ADRC can refer individuals to an array of in-home, community-based and institutional services, as well as offer decision-making support through a service called Options Counseling.  It also provides functional assessment for Home and Community Based Services (HCBS), including waiver programs. 

 

Pawnee Mental Health

Description: Pawnee Mental Health is a private, not-for-profit community mental health center providing comprehensive mental health and substance abuse services to people in a ten-county area of North Central Kansas: Clay, Cloud, Geary, Jewell, Marshall, Mitchell, Pottawatomie, Republic, Riley, and Washington.  Pawnee's Crisis Services staff are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Description: Shepherd's Crossing is a ministry that provides budget counseling, referrals, and financial assistance with utilities, rent, and prescription medication costs to residents in financial crisis living in Riley county and St. George.  Hours are Tuesday, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Thursday, 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Description: The Student Access Center at Kansas State University provides a wide range of accommodations and supportive services for individuals who have physical or learning disabilities.  Accommodations for a student can be made based on a specific disability.

  

The Second Helping

Description: The Second Helping is a Sunday evening soup kitchen for anyone who needs it. Dinner is served at 5:15 pm. Guests are served a home-cooked dinner in the fellowship hall of the First Congregational United Church of Christ. Upon departure, guests are given a sack lunch containing a nutritious breakfast and lunch for the next day.

Description: Three Rivers is an Independent Living Center serving people with disabilities regardless of age, type or severity of disability or income level. The mission is to promote self-reliance of individuals with disability through education, advocacy, training, and support. Some services offered are: budgeting, home maintenance, self-advocacy skills, and training to reach employment goals.

  

Working Healthy

Description: Working Healthy (WH) is a Kansas Medicaid Buy-In insurance program for persons with disabilities. The WH program allows people with disabilities to return to or increase their work effort without losing critical Medicaid coverage. The WORK (Work, Opportunities, Reward, Kansas) program provides personal assistance and other services for consumers eligible for Working Healthy whose functional limitations would otherwise make them eligible for the Developmental Disability, Physical Disability or Traumatic Brain Injury waivers.

Description: Home repair financing is available through the Repair Loan and Grant Program.  Home repairs include removal of health and safety hazards, essential home improvements, and handicap accessibility.  Owners must occupy the home and meet income qualifications.  1% loans and grants are available if resident meets qualifications and repayment requirements.  Please call for eligibility information.
